Why am I doing this?

I’m constantly reading exercise science medical journal articles (T Nation is my favorite), trying to stay up to date with the latest groundbreaking discoveries. This one in particular caught my eye.

But, this theory is not so new.

In 1996, naturopathic physician Dr. Peter D’Adamo proposed the blood type diet, and had a bestseller called Eat Right 4 Your Type. In his book, he suggested that eating according to your blood type would result in overall health improvement. However, I was super skeptical about if this actually worked, as the previous large scale trials of 1000+ people were inconclusive.

That being said, if this is actually a way to improve overall health + lose weight, I want to know!  The only way to find out was to put the theory to the test.

There is, of course, some science behind this already. Dr. D’Adamo suggests the following:

  1. Many microorganisms make markers (antigens) similar to one blood type or another. This may give them special favor inside the body of a person of that blood type, but can also be a source of trouble.
  2. Some bacteria have a taste preference for one blood type versus another, and consume that blood type antigen as a source of energy. Many of the byproducts are actually beneficial to the digestive tract.
  3. Microorganisms can use the blood type antigens found on cells and in the mucus lining the digestive tract as a way to attach to the cells and tissues. This can lead to an increased risk of certain infections between people of different blood types.
  4. Certain microorganisms can trigger a larger than expected response from the immune system of a particular blood type. In that blood type, an infection with that particular virus or bacteria may lead to excessive levels of inflammation. This can compromise the body’s response to the infection.

I wanted to test if the cellular level changes were significant enough for you to experience noticeable improvement in your day-to-day lives. If the evidence from this experiment proves significant, this may call for an even larger, more constricted re-test.

About Blood Type Diets

There are 4 blood types, both positive and negative, and they are each *supposedly* going to benefit by eating/not eating certain things.

Type A: “The Agrarian”. Should eat a diet rich in plants, and completely free of “toxic” red meat. This closely resembles a vegetarian diet.

Type B: “The Nomad”. Can eat plants and most meats (except chicken and pork), and can also eat some dairy. Should avoid wheat, corn, lentils, tomatoes.

Type AB:  “The Enigma”. A mix between types A and B. Foods to eat include seafood, tofu, dairy, beans and grains. Should avoid kidney beans, corn, beef and chicken.

Type: O: “The Hunter”. High-protein diet based largely on meat, fish, poultry, certain fruits and vegetables, but limited in grains, legumes and dairy. It closely resembles the paleo diet.


And every scientist knows that before you run a trial, you must first have a hypothesis. Here is mine: Eating within a blood type’s parameters, along with exercise, will result in an overall improvement in health and happiness.

How are we going to measure an improvement in health? Glad you asked. Skin condition, weight loss, stamina improvement, sleep improvement, increased happiness, increase in energy levels, etc.

They are all keeping a log of their meals, workouts, and water consumption. They are also vlogging every day their experiences!

Below is their beginning stats. I have (so artfully) blocked out their names for privacy purposes :). I’m not surprised that there are so many type O, because it is the most common type. I am type O.
